Create an edge for your stone walkway

A stone walkway should not only be postatic but also for safety, especially if there are children or elderly people in the house. But sometimes some designs are lost by existing herbs and flowers. This is why it is necessary to make an edge for the stone walkway. There are several border options to choose from, including the use of metal, plastics and bricks. Installing it is very easy, but it is always better to hire a specialist.

At South Atlantic Masonry and Concrete Contractor located in Peachtree City, Atlanta, Newnan, Sharpsburg, and Senoia, we want to give the steps to create an edge for your stone walkway:

You must first measure the length of the stone walkway to calculate the amount of material you will need, this will also help you estimate the amount of gravel and sand you will place in the trench to level the edge.

Then create an edge trench by digging a trench next to the existing stone walkway. Your trench must be deep enough. If the stone walkway is not straight, follow the curves to dig your trench. It should not be too wide or too narrow. The channel must be just enough to support the bricks to be installed and the cushioning materials to fit. If you find a drain pipe, you can extend the trench at that specific point where the pipe is located to direct the drained water away from the bricks with edges.

When the trench is ready, level the base with the base by placing sand along the trench and make sure the base is the same. Start laying bricks on the side of the trench closest to the edge of the existing stone walkway. Place one brick on top of another. Continue laying more bricks until the bricks are slightly higher (one to two inches) than the stone walkway.

How to take care of the stone

The stone is frequently used for fireplaces, indoor and outdoor walls and courtyards. Their maintenance, care and repair vary according to the type of stone and the function they perform.

At South Atlantic Masonry and Concrete Contractor located in Peachtree City, Atlanta, Newnan, Sharpsburg, and Senoia, we want to give a guide about how to take care of the stone of all your house:

First you must remove the dust and debris, to make it brush the stone from time to time. To remove the soot from the firestones, dissolve 4 ounces of yellow soap to wash in boiling water.

For daily grooming, wash the stone with detergent or soap, using a mild abrasive if necessary. Rinse and dry. To improve the appearance, rub the dry stone with a soft cloth dampened with enamel for oil furniture, then wipe off excess oil and stone. This makes the stone uniformly dark and shiny. Be careful not to use wax in the fires, as it will be melted by heat or may cause a fire.

The firestones will be easier to clean if you apply a penetrating sealer that contains tung oil. This is resistant to moisture and forms a coating strong enough to wash with soap and water.

In any case, it is always best to consult a specialist.

Natural stone fireplaces: more heat for longer

It may seem initially more expensive to hire a fireplace made with natural stones, but in the long run it will be more economical and better than one made of bricks or blocks.

At South Atlantic Masonry and Concrete Contractor located in Peachtree City, Atlanta, Newnan, Sharpsburg, and Senoia, we want to show you the benefits of building a natural stone fireplace:

One of the main benefits of the natural stone fireplace is its ability to retain and radiate heat more efficiently than a man-made stone fireplace. The natural stone will always last longer than the stone made by man. In many cases the natural stone fireplace can last longer than the house itself. Very little maintenance is needed over the years and repairs are minimal.

For the unique characteristics of each stone, each fireplace will have a unique look. The stones are available in a variety of colors and textures, and can be experimented by combining different colors for different styles.

¿Use or not use mortar on your stone wall?

The stone walls give beauty to your home in your garden or patio. They also help prevent soil erosion and landslides.

At South Atlantic Masonry and Concrete Contractor located in Peachtree City, Atlanta, Newnan, Sharpsburg, and Senoia, we want to help you decide if you want a stacked stone wall or a stone wall built with mortar.

Walls with mortar
They are ideal to avoid erosion of the soil by water or wind. Also as a barrier at the top of a slope. The wall with the mortar can withstand the pressure from behind, up and down. You must make sure to build your wall with mortar on a firmly compacted soil base reinforced with gravel for drainage. This type of walls can be built up to 16 feet high.

Walls without mortar
These walls must be built by choosing the stones well for a good connection between them. When the soil is pressed against the back of the wall, it forces the stones closer to those of the lower layer. Build walls without mortar, with a soil embankment on one side, no more than 48 inches high. The mortar-free walls must be a maximum of 28 inches high. For better stability, you should use plastic-coated geogrid mesh between the stones at any other level on these walls.

It is always advisable to have the opinion of specialists to tell you what type of wall you should contact.

Next, spray the cracks between the stones with a herbicide to make sure the roots are killed and the weeds do not grow back.

Now spray the yard with a pressure washer using only water. Next, add a cleaning solution to the washer and spray the yard to loosen any remaining debris. At the end, allow the cleaning solution to settle for 10 minutes to absorb the soil into the dirt of pedestrian traffic. And to finish spray the yard with a pressure to remove it.

New patio materials: stone or brick?

When you decide to have a patio in your garden, the first thing to decide is the material that best suits you. There are many materials that can be used and you must decide on what material will work best.

At South Atlantic Masonry and Concrete Contractor located in Peachtree City, Atlanta, Newnan, Sharpsburg, and Senoia, we give you a guide to help you decide on what material to use in your new patio :

The options range from cobblestones built to something more unusual, such as flagstones. To choose the material you must plan the design and structure of your yard.

The stone can be used in various ways to create a patio. They can be cut into paving stones and installed as if they were brick. Because of their size, they can also form large squares. There are stone materials in the form of slabs, flat on one side in order to give a patio feeling. With these materials you can create a natural environment in your garden. For example, you can place the slabs with intermediate spaces and add grass, which will add much appeal.

Bricks can also be used although it is the most commonly used material. It is because they are cheap and easy to install. You can create a huge amount of designs and patterns using brick pavers in your yard. There are many patio construction kits that help with the designs and offer all the patio materials you need. The only negative is that they are too common and your patio will be one more with bricks.

A creative way to decide is to combine them. You can install brick pavers along the edge. The slabs, the stone can be used as a central material. In this way it will preserve the structure that the bricks give with the naturalness of the stone and can compensate in expenses.

At  South Atlantic Masonry and Concrete Contractor located in Peachtree City, Atlanta, Newnan, Sharpsburg, and Senoia, we give you this guide to efficiently clean the front of your fireplace:

Step 1. Cleaning the ashes of a chimney.
Remove the bottle from the inside of the fireplace and remove the remaining ashes with the brush from the chimney so that the debris does not reach the area you are cleaning. Then, completely vacuum the loose sand or dust. Once the debris has been completely swept, make sure the area surrounding the home has access or newspapers to protect your floors.

Step 2. Clean around a fireplace

Even if you use mild cleansers, it is mandatory to wear rubber gloves. It is likely to be rubbing a little, and your hands will thank you for wearing proper gloves. Protective goggles like goggles are also highly recommended because even dirty water can cause irritation.

Step 3: Choose a cleaning solution
The types of cleaners that use the safe place to clean the place. Start first with the fastest cleaning options and move on to any corrosive solution. If the area has been sealed, it may be enough to wash it with warm water and a cloth.

Step 4 - Eliminate persistent stains
If the home has been severely neglected and the stains are more severe, you may need to use harsher chemicals to remove the soot. Start by mixing a paste of one cup of ammonia with one pound of ground pumice and enough water so that you can APPLY the mixture directly in the difficult places. Once again, let it stand for 10 minutes, and then rub and rinse.

You may consider applying a sealant that will better protect the stone in front of your fireplace. And that's it!
