Making terraces to create a flat area in a garden is much easier with stone retaining walls. There are several ways and materials to make them.
At South Atlantic Masonry and Concrete Contractor located in Peachtree City, Atlanta, Newnan, Sharpsburg, and Senoia, we want to share some types of stone for build retaining walls:
As it is a structural element, heavy stones must be used to stop the movement of soil and water erosion. The walls must have a maximum of three feet high, if they are needed, they must be designed by an engineer.
We can find several types of stones to build them:
Natural stone
Natural stone like granite is a good choice. Its darker color with lighter grain gives a nice appearance to the wall. In addition, granite is one of the heaviest materials available that will help retain soil movement and thus higher walls can be built.
Limestone
The limestone is lighter in color and weight. Because they are lighter, larger stones are needed to prevent the earth from dying and causing the wall to fall.
Faux Stone
It is a stone made of concrete simulating natural stone. They are made in standard sizes and designed to tie and form a stiffer wall. Ideal for unstable and wet lands.
