Increase your Home´s Value with Stone Veneer

Improving the look of your home with a modern stone veneer will not only make it more beautiful, it will also increase the value of your home.

This type of makeover is relatively simple, and a lot less expensive than you might think. It will change the entire look and character of your house and also make it more marketable should you decide to sell.

At South Atlantic Masonry and Concrete Contractor located in Atlanta and Florida, we give you some tips to incease your Home´s Value with Stone Veneer:

1. Any home improvements may be considered an investment, but the big difference a new stone veneer can make this one of the best investments.

2. Whether you want to revamp the entire exterior of your home, or remodel your kitchen, bathroom or parts of your indoor or outdoor living space, a stone veneer offers numerous options.

3. Stone Veneer is lighter than real stone, easier to install, and there is a lot more variety.

4. Stone Veneer comes in an enormous palette of colors. You can choose something that will make your home look like a castle or a country villa, or give it the appearance that stack stone, rubble, field or ledge stone, or even river rocks were used to build it. You don’t need any form of foundation to support the veneer units.

5. In addition to improve the appearance of your exterior or interior walls, a good quality stone veneer that has been correctly installed will also help to protect your home by repelling water and preventing moisture from seeping into the framework.

6. Money spent on bathroom and kitchens offer maximum return on investment (ROI). You don’t even have to clad the whole room with stone veneer; often a feature wall will have even more impact.

7. Installing stone veneer around a fireplace or as a backdrop to a bar or conversation nook will give the area special appeal.

8. On a smaller scale you could install a stone veneer around the front door, or clad your porch with veneer to make it stand out. Pot plants and other finishes work well in this environment too.

Tips for Stone Walls in your patio

To improve the appearance of your landscape you must choose the best materials, location, and method. At South Atlantic Masonry and Concrete Contractor located in Atlanta and Florida, we give you four tips that you can keep in mind when deciding to renovate your yard:

1. Choose the right materials:

If you are confused about which materials you need to buy, you should analyze the different types of stone and the best applications for each. Cast-concrete blocks, round fieldstone, and stone veneer may be good choices.

2. Choose the location wisely:

One smart option is to build a stone wall that does double-duty, serving as a patio or garden border and extra backyard seating. For a uniform look around a patio, you can use cast concrete blocks.

Another choice is using stone to build a retaining wall to help level your landscape.

3. Tool-Mortared Joints:

Freestanding-mortared walls built correctly can last a lifetime because mortar holds the stones together and creates a strong wall. However, messy mortar isn't as visually appealing as the dry-laid look. The best would be to choose a mortar with a dark gray pigment and trowels the joints between the capstones.

4. Renovate plain Wall:

Stone-veneer panels offer an easy way to get the look of a stone wall, without the heavy lifting. The panels look like stacked natural stone and enable you to transform an exposed foundation, bare cinder block, concrete, or framed walls in one weekend.

Pavers, Natural Stone or Concrete for your Patio

Choosing between pavers, natural stone or concrete for your patio or other outdoor areas can be a hard decision to make. Being the primary outdoor space used by you and your family, the choice of surface covering for your patio should be one that you’ll be happy with for many years to come.

Unlike plantings and furniture, hardscape materials are not easy to change once they are installed, so it’s a big commitment.

Your patio is where you'll spend most of your time in your landscape, so you'll want to pick a hardscape material that creates the right atmosphere for your landscape design. Choosing the best hardscape material for your Landscape depends on your style, vision and budget.

To help you decide which hardscape material is the best choice, at South Atlantic Masonry and Concrete Contractor located in Atlanta and Florida, we give you some points that outline the pros and cons of each:

1. Concrete Pavers:

- Concrete pavers offer a multitude of style choices, from modern to classic that are beautifully suited to many patios, outdoor kitchens and pool areas and offers many choices for designs.
- Classic style pavers that mimic the look of brick are a popular choice for traditional and historic style homes because it is the ideal paving material if you want to create an established and authentic look. But the modern style with irregular shapes and precision cuts can be used in modern and Mediterranean landscapes as it is easy to adapt for use in more contemporary designs.
- Concrete pavers can also be irregular or square shaped and laid in many patterns including herringbone, basket weave and even circular patterns.
- The biggest advantage to concrete pavers is the variation of colors, from white wash to grays and browns to red, so you can choose to mix and match colors or alternate depending on your pattern.
- Concrete pavers is often more costly than other pavers because it requires a lot of grading, backfilling and labor to install and is prone to shifting and breakage — though with skilled installation and regular maintenance, your landscape installer can curb the adverse affects of weather and age.

2. Natural Stone Pavers:

- It can be difficult to choose the best stone for patios as you have a lot of options when it comes to natural stone pavers. You can choose flat-topped uniform stone or rough-edged irregular shapes.
- Natural stone pavers can be made of slate, flagstone, travertine, and limestone, colors vary naturally and offer a rich, textured, earthy appearance.
- The type of natural stone you choose depends on the look and feel of your patio and landscaping. Irregular flagstone can create a gorgeous, rugged look with a lot of detail, while uniform dimensional stone offers a more linear and symmetrical patterns.
- Because it needs to be excavated from a quarry, natural stone is expensive. It also requires more labor to install and level due to the uneven thickness and irregular shapes of the stones.
- Some types of stone can discolor unevenly in the sun and incur damage by snow and ice removal techniques.
- Natural stone can shift and move over time especially if your landscape requires a lot of grading or backfilling but if they've been installed properly they'll last a long time without cracking.
- Depending on the spaces and fill between stones, you'll need to watch out for expanding gaps and weed growth. Stones can be set in concrete, which can also crack and require repair.

3. Poured Concrete:

- Traditional, textured, gray poured concrete is the most inexpensive yet versatile option.
- Poured concrete patios can be formed into any shape and thickness, which means you can have an affordable patio to suit any function in your yard, from simple dining to a pool surround.
- If you want to add more style to your poured concrete patio, you can have it stamped, scored and colored to accommodate any pattern and color scheme.
- Like concrete pavers, concrete is ideal for creating level surfaces.
- It's the easiest material to take care of because it's durable and only needs to be resealed every few years.
- Due to weather changes, extreme seasonal temperatures and age, concrete can crack, no matter how well it was initially installed and how many joints were put in place to prevent it.
- It can be slick when wet, so you'll need to consider this if you are planning to install it around spas or pools.

6 Beautiful ways Natural Stone can increase your Home’s value

First impressions count if you have your house for sale. Even if you’re not selling your home, you might be wondering what updates or upgrades will increase the value of your house.

Using natural stone in an update or upgrade in your home often is a solid return on your investment.

Natural Stone not only add more value to a home, its longevity is unmatched. Stone does not break down and can stand the test of time. Stone features are there for the long haul, which you cannot say for other materials.

At South Atlantic Masonry and Concrete Contractor located in Atlanta and Florida,  we give you five ways that natural stone can help increase your home’s value, both indoors and outdoors:

- Using Natural Stone in your Home’s Interior:

1. Granite or Marble uses:

Marble is a prime choice for bathrooms. Any marble in the white to gray tones with different varieties of veining and patterns are most popular like Carrara White Antique, Italian White, Bianco Carrara, and others.
Marble subway tiles need not be restricted to the shower and bath surround walls. They can be used as a backsplash in kitchens, too. Another option is to use larger marble slabs for the walls.
Granite continues to be popular for kitchens, for both its range of colors and designs as well as its durability and strength. While it can be considered a higher-end product, prospective homeowners seek it out as a feature they want in their home.

2. Patterns and Shapes:

Don’t overlook different patterns and shapes for kitchen floors. For bathroom floors, we recommend hexagon/honeycomb shapes for their classic looks and basket weave and herringbone patterns because of their popularity.
Many homeowners are choosing different patterns and shapes for their kitchen floors, too, for texture and interest. While costs will vary based on the complexity of the design, type of natural stone and square footage, it’s also possible to keep costs down by incorporating larger slabs of natural stone. Homeowners can still enjoy the wow factor of the pattern or shape without it being overwhelming or costly.

- Using Natural Stone in your Home’s Exterior:

1. Wide Stone walk to front door:

Wide walks accent the front of a house and make it appear more stately.

2. Limestone Details:

While limestone may be more expensive than brick or other common materials, it will always add more value and more than pay for itself. We recommend using limestone pavers to create walkways and steps, or adding limestone to windowsills, crown moldings, or front stairs.

3. Stone paving to backyard patio:

Natural Stone is durable, has its authentic appeal and makes a desirable feature for outdoor living.

4. A low Stone Wall:

A low stone wall around two sides of a corner of the rear patio creates a sheltered corner where people can congregate. It’s very inviting and changes the look of the backyard.

How to include Natural Stone and Pavers into your Exterior

Natural stones are among the most attractive and prized landscaping and building materials used by property owners, builders, artisans, architects, landscape designers, and contractors. It is primarily because of their sheer beauty and decorative possibilities that natural stone and pavers are used extensively in landscaping.

Additionally, landscape structures made of high-quality natural stones such as granite, marble, slate, bluestone, limestone, porphyry, and flagstone are able to withstand extreme loads and weather changes. This means that you won’t have to repair or replace it after some time.

At South Atlantic Masonry and Concrete Contractor located in Atlanta and Florida,  we give you four different ways you can incorporate these versatile hardscape materials into your exterior design and get the most of what they have to offer:

1. Walkways:

Paved walkways serve to control foot traffic through your landscape, creating flow between separate outdoor living spaces, and making your landscape more accessible. Irregular shaped natural stone such as bluestone or flagstone used in a meandering footpath can emphasize a landscape’s wild and rustic appeal, while large natural stone slabs can emphasize the clean horizontal lines of a modern house. Either way, the addition of functional walkways is a great way to incorporate natural stone or concrete pavers into your landscape.

2. Driveways:

For most houses, driveways take up a large share of front yard space and a striking and original design incorporating quality concrete pavers can transform a front yard, boost curb appeal, and add to your home’s value. The performance of pavers in comparison to poured or stamped concrete and asphalt make them perfect for driveways, even in circumstances of heavy traffic and substantial loads. With such an extensive variety, any number of designs and styles can be achieved using concrete pavers.

3. Pool Surrounds:

Both concrete pavers and natural stone are perfect for paved poolside surrounds. They provide a safe, non-slip surface that is resistant to water and salt damage. The golden color of some varieties of natural stone, such as sandstone, is the perfect complement to the calming blue of the water and creates the summery look and feel of a sun-soaked beach. In addition to being used as surface covering, natural stone can also be introduced in the form of rock formations and waterfall features to give your poolside a great look.

4. Outdoor Fireplaces:

Nothing brings nighttime ambiance to your outdoor living spaces quite like an outdoor fireplace. Often built from natural stone, an outdoor fireplace becomes an elegant focal point that draws attention with authentic charm and natural appeal. The natural ability of stone to retain heat, also means your outdoor spaces will remain warmer for longer.

5 Benefits of installing a Stone Fireplace In your Home

If you’re looking for a new fireplace for your home or if you want to replace an existing fireplace, then you may wish to consider stone fireplaces. Stone fireplaces not only offer an elegant, attractive option with a large variety of styles to match any home, but also they are often the most eye-catching fireplaces that work very well from both an aesthetic and practical standpoint.

At South Atlantic Masonry and Concrete Contractor located in Atlanta and Florida,  we give you five benefits of installing a Stone Fireplace in your home:

1. Beautiful Design and Aesthetics:

A fireplace is something that immediately draws the eye in any home. Visually, stone fireplaces are stunning. And they almost fit into any interior setting. If you’re looking for something that provides a touch of elegance and prestige, then a hand carved stone fireplace is certainly something you’d want to invest in.

2. Durable Quality:

Aside from the practical and aesthetical benefits, stone fireplaces are built to last. Stone in itself whether it be carved or cast is elegant looking, strong and very durable – which means that once you purchase and get a stone fireplace installed, it will last for many years, without the need for you to upgrade.

3. Maintenance:

Stone fireplaces are strong and durable, so no matter how much you use the fireplace over the years, you can rest assured that the stone will not damage due to heat or other factors. Stone also gives a polished look, meaning that maintenance is minimal.

4. Lower utility bills:

Heating bills are only going up and a great way to combat these rising costs is by adding a fireplace. Once again, the style will have a large effect, as gas and wood-burning fireplaces tend to lose heat through the chimney. Electric fireplaces are more efficient and keep the heat bottled up inside the house and/or room you are heating. Either way, no matter what style you choose, you will undoubtedly save money in the long run

 5.) Styles:

There are three types of fireplaces: wood, gas or electric, but there are many styles of which to choose from. Of course, your chosen fireplace design will largely depend on your home’s design. The most popular and trendy options are:

-Stone
-Tile
-Brick
-Limestone
-Marble
-Wood

5 Outdoor Stone Wall design ideas

Your outdoor space has many functions, whether it's a place to unwind and relax or hold a big gathering with family and friends. Create a long-lasting and elegant enclosure by adding a stone wall to your yard can be a great decision.

At South Atlantic Masonry and Concrete Contractor located in Atlanta and Florida, we give you five inspiring outdoor Stone Walls ideas that will help you make your space a favorite hangout:

1. Flagstone Wall:

Slim stones stacked into a low wall make an attractive way to delineate space and add a sense of structure to a backyard landscape. Differences in stone thicknesses make it nearly impossible to build a flagstone wall with an exact horizontal top. It's much easier to fit the flagstones without regard to thickness, and then choose flat pieces to create a level top. Low walls provide additional seating or a platform on which to display potted plants.

2. Undulating Fieldstone Wall:

An undulating stone wall creates a barrier while looking stylish at the same time. Fieldstone offers a natural material for garden walls. You can either dry stack stone or use mortar to hold it together. Dry-stacked walls should be no taller than 4 feet. For a natural garden backdrop, a stone wall offers a classic and long-lasting option.

3. Varied-Size Stone Wall:

A lattice-topped wall shows off the beauty and diversity of the stone. Large and small stones can be mortared together to create a textural wall that is perfect for a cottage or country garden.

4. Stone Wall Entryway:

A dramatic stone wall features stone steps and espaliered pear trees trained to stretch horizontally across the walls. Mortared-stone retaining walls offer long-lasting solutions to sloped yards and offer beautiful surfaces and backdrops for plantings.

5. Low Stone Wall:

A low stone wall creates a clear barrier along a property line without blocking the view. A wall made of different shapes and sizes of stone adds textural visual interest to a home's landscaping. Walls can also be topped with pots and containers.

How to include Brick in your Kitchen

Brick can lend a wonderful historic look, warm up a kitchen or make you feel like you’re in an urban loft.

At  South Atlantic Masonry and Concrete Contractor located in Atlanta and Florida, we give you eigth tips to help you include Brick in your Kitchen:

1. The easiest way to get the look of real brick without having to accommodate its weight is to use a brick veneer, which is typically ¾ inch thick.

2. Sealants are not necessary on these products, however, if you choose to seal it, it must be a silane-based breathable sealer. Using a sealer may darken the color, slow the natural movement of moisture out of the brick and/or increase the possibility of efflorescence.

3. Cleanin the brick wall is easy, but there are some strict guidelines to follow. It’s very important not to use an acid-based cleaner, any sort of power washing, sandblasting or a wire brush.

4. We recommend using a granulated soap like laundry detergent mixed with water and scrubbing with a stiff-bristled brush, and we also recommend using one part vinegar to five parts water.

5. Brick veneer can be applied similarly to a tile, not requiring any additional structural support.

6. The reclaimed brick was used to age the kitchen while adding warmth and texture.

7. The key to using brick in the kitchen is balance. It can be a great texture, and if you are worried about it being too heavy, you can paint to reduce overall weight and have nice texture.

8. Brick kitchen walls are not limited to traditional and transitional looks. A brick accent wall helps define the kitchen and dining room spaces in the open plan.

4 Ideas for Incorporating Natural Stone into your Landscaping

Natural stone and concrete pavers can significantly improve the aesthetic beauty and functionality of your property. Natural Stone has the ability to bring color, function, and texture to a landscape, and can help form the floor plan to your outdoor spaces.

At South Atlantic Masonry and Concrete Contractor located in Atlanta and Florida,  we give you four ideas for incorporating Natural Stone and Concrete Pavers into your landscape design and get the most of what they have to offer:

1. Flagstone Patio:

The advantage of a flagstone patio, whether you’re capping a concrete slab or setting the stone in sand or soil, it that they can be as formal or informal as one wishes. Flagstone is a great material due to its durability, character and the variety of colors and textures available.

2. Rock the Foundation:

Slate or flagstone is a versatile choice for patios and walkways, as these sleek stones look good paired with almost any home style (stucco, brick, wood) and outdoor decor. In addition, they never need to be refinished like decking. While some homeowners consider pavers a DIY project, installation can be tricky due to the stones varying widths and tendency to shear over the years if laid down incorrectly.

3. Build a Stone Wall:

A stone retaining wall can be used to prevent soil erosion or the movement of other loose, organic materials. Despite its functional intent, this structure can still be as pleasing to the eye as it is effective. Stone walls can be mortared or dry laid, long or short, tall or low. Gravity and placement determine their overall structural integrity.

4. Stone Path and Steps:

Paths, like patios, can be as informal or informal as one desires. Paths can be made of flagstone pavers, larger flagstone slabs, or gravel. Most paths are edged with a material such as a flagstone strip stone to keep the material between the stones contained. Stone steps are always a nice feature in a garden.

Please contact us today to find out how South Atlantic Masonry and Concrete Contractor located in Atlanta and Florida can help you renovate or create the best landscape for your home.

Natural Stone for the Bathroom

Natural stone remains at a high level as a premier building material because it reflects unique character, stability, and grandeur. Variations in natural stone’s broad range of color, pattern, and texture are visually interesting and impossible to replicate. And, because it comes from the earth, from eco-friendly compositions, it is a natural choice.

At South Atlantic Masonry and Concrete Contractor  located in Atlanta and Florida,  we give you some tips to include the natural stone to your bathroom:

1. A beautiful stone makes the bathroom feel elegant and natural at the same time.

2. Natural stone in the shower is largely about appearance. It looks great in your shower or shower/tub, or as a tub surround. But if your primary concern in your shower is water permeability and maintenance, then look to acrylic or ceramic tiles.

3. Fake Natural Stone as an Option: Many tile manufacturers offer a porcelain or ceramic product that looks amazingly like real stone. From a distance, these rock-looking porcelain tiles can pass as natural stone.
One problem is that fake stone's texture looks nothing like that of real stone, especially for highly textured materials like slate.

4. Natural Stone Maintenance: Most any natural stone can be made to work in a shower, as long as it is properly sealed. Unsealed stone allows for water infiltration. Use a microfiber cloth to dust granite surfaces. For everyday cleaning, just wipe the stone surfaces with water. Use a pH-neutral cleaner for weekly cleanings.

5. The best natural stone tile for a bathroom: The main concern with using stone in bathrooms is moisture. Even though the stone is conceived under extremely high temperatures and pressure within the Earth, it is prone to being affected by moisture, either direct or indirect. Though slate produces a dark, gloomy feeling within showers, it works well in the bathroom on the floor or walls. Marble is another popular wall tile material.

Please contact us today to find out how South Atlantic Masonry and Concrete Contractor located in Atlanta and Florida can help you renovate or create the best stone wall for your bathroom. All our designs are made to customers exact requirements so each stone wall is individual to your taste, style and the dimensions of your bathroom.
