How to take care of the stone

The stone is frequently used for fireplaces, indoor and outdoor walls and courtyards. Their maintenance, care and repair vary according to the type of stone and the function they perform.

At South Atlantic Masonry and Concrete Contractor located in Peachtree City, Atlanta, Newnan, Sharpsburg, and Senoia, we want to give a guide about how to take care of the stone of all your house:

First you must remove the dust and debris, to make it brush the stone from time to time. To remove the soot from the firestones, dissolve 4 ounces of yellow soap to wash in boiling water.

For daily grooming, wash the stone with detergent or soap, using a mild abrasive if necessary. Rinse and dry. To improve the appearance, rub the dry stone with a soft cloth dampened with enamel for oil furniture, then wipe off excess oil and stone. This makes the stone uniformly dark and shiny. Be careful not to use wax in the fires, as it will be melted by heat or may cause a fire.

The firestones will be easier to clean if you apply a penetrating sealer that contains tung oil. This is resistant to moisture and forms a coating strong enough to wash with soap and water.

In any case, it is always best to consult a specialist.

Natural stone fireplaces: more heat for longer

It may seem initially more expensive to hire a fireplace made with natural stones, but in the long run it will be more economical and better than one made of bricks or blocks.

At South Atlantic Masonry and Concrete Contractor located in Peachtree City, Atlanta, Newnan, Sharpsburg, and Senoia, we want to show you the benefits of building a natural stone fireplace:

One of the main benefits of the natural stone fireplace is its ability to retain and radiate heat more efficiently than a man-made stone fireplace. Natural stone absorbs the heat of the sun or any source of heat, but does not store it. This means that the stone will actually release the heat that has been absorbed in the environment in which it is located. What produces a warmer room for longer.

The natural stone will always last longer than the stone made by man. In many cases the natural stone fireplace can last longer than the house itself. Very little maintenance is needed over the years and repairs are minimal.

For the unique characteristics of each stone, each fireplace will have a unique look. The stones are available in a variety of colors and textures, and can be experimented by combining different colors for different styles.

Consult a specialist for all the additional benefits and savings over time if you choose to contract the construction of a natural stone fireplace.

¿Use or not use mortar on your stone wall?

The stone walls give beauty to your home in your garden or patio. They also help prevent soil erosion and landslides.

At South Atlantic Masonry and Concrete Contractor located in Peachtree City, Atlanta, Newnan, Sharpsburg, and Senoia, we want to help you decide if you want a stacked stone wall or a stone wall built with mortar.

Walls with mortar
They are ideal to avoid erosion of the soil by water or wind. Also as a barrier at the top of a slope. The wall with the mortar can withstand the pressure from behind, up and down. You must make sure to build your wall with mortar on a firmly compacted soil base reinforced with gravel for drainage. This type of walls can be built up to 16 feet high.

Walls without mortar
These walls must be built by choosing the stones well for a good connection between them. When the soil is pressed against the back of the wall, it forces the stones closer to those of the lower layer. Build walls without mortar, with a soil embankment on one side, no more than 48 inches high. The mortar-free walls must be a maximum of 28 inches high. For better stability, you should use plastic-coated geogrid mesh between the stones at any other level on these walls.

It is always advisable to have the opinion of specialists to tell you what type of wall you should contact.

How to keep your stone patio clean

The stone courtyards are very beautiful and add luxury to our homes, but due to the fact that they are outdoors, they need regular cleaning and maintenance. Weeds, dirt and other debris will stick to the stone, and you have to clean them properly to avoid accidents and bad appearance.

At South Atlantic Masonry and Concrete Contractor located in Peachtree City, Atlanta, Newnan, Sharpsburg, and Senoia, we want to share some tips to keep your stone patio clean and safe:

First, you have to remove the furniture and objects and sweep the stones of the yard quickly to loosen the moss and dirt stuck.

Then you have to manually start the weeds that are born between the stones. The growth of the root from the weeds can cause the stones to have water under them, which will cause the stones to settle or, even worse, to break or break. Next, spray the cracks between the stones with a herbicide to make sure the roots are killed and the weeds do not grow back.

Now spray the yard with a pressure washer using only water. Next, add a cleaning solution to the washer and spray the yard to loosen any remaining debris. At the end, allow the cleaning solution to settle for 10 minutes to absorb the soil into the dirt of pedestrian traffic. And to finish spray the yard with a pressure to remove it.

In most climates, washing and cleaning 2 to 3 times a year is enough to keep your stone patio in perfect condition.

3 tips to clean your stone fireplace

When you think about cleaning your stone fireplace, you may feel a little worried about the difficulty of this important task to avoid not only its deterioration but also for safety.

At South Atlantic Masonry and Concrete Contractor located in Peachtree City, Atlanta, Newnan, Sharpsburg, and Senoia, we want to share 3 tips to keep your fireplace clean and safe:

Tip 1: Throw salt on the fire
There is a custom of throwing salt on a fire, this will make the soot stains around the stone fireplace disappear. However, it is possible that you have some stains so close that they resist this treatment, in those cases you will have to start the manual cleaning task.

Tip 2: Clean frequently
The more continuous you clean, the less stuck will be the remnants of soot and the easier it will be to clean them. Brush the soot from the fireplace with a soft cleaning brush once a week, the soot will not have time to solidify and will fall easily.

Tip 3: The last resort: Trisodium phosphate

If brushing did not work, the last resort is to use trisodium phosphate. This is a dangerous chemical and you must take proper precautions. Wear protective goggles, a mask and gloves; and make sure the floors and furniture are covered so the chemical does not damage them, and remember to use it diluted in water. For more safety, consult a specialist before mixing.
